What is the Riverpreneur Challenge about?

Riverpitch is your chance to become a ‘Riverpreneur’! You’ll choose a river in Queensland, identify a problem it’s facing, and pitch an innovative solution—Shark Tank style. Think science meets creativity meets impact.

Who can participate?

High school students aged 15–18 from across Queensland. You can work solo or in a team, and we encourage you to nominate a mentor (like a teacher or community leader) to support you.

What is a Riverpreneur?

It’s someone who uses entrepreneurial thinking to find sustainable solutions for rivers. If you care about rivers and love thinking outside the box, you’re already on your way!

What do I need to submit?

  1. A short, engaging video pitch (3 minutes maximum) – see the Innovation Learning Guide for further information
  2. Completed portfolio of activities from the Innovation Learning Guide 

What makes a good Riverpitch?

Be factual, fun, and imaginative. Use visuals, storytelling, and clear science communication. Make it memorable and compelling – just like a real pitch!

What do winners receive?

Three finalists will receive:

  • One-day registration to the 26th International River Symposium (IRS) in Brisbane for yourself and a teacher/mentor
  • A chance to pitch live to a panel of judges and potential investors during the Youth River Leaders session on Monday 8 September 2025
  • Support with travel and accommodation expenses (if required) associated with attending the in-person event
  • A certificate recognising your outstanding achievements
  • A gift voucher

The winner will also receive in addition to the above:

  • A bespoke river-inspired trophy
  • A one-hour, one-on-one mentoring session with a river leader
  • A special invitation to join the IRF’s River Leaders Network, comprised of global Champions driving real-world impact for our rivers

How do I submit my video and portfolio?

Submission instructions will be shared with your school and will be available online. Ensure that you follow the video format and upload deadlines carefully.

Can I choose any river in Queensland?

Yes! Whether it’s a major river system or a local creek you care about – it’s your call. Just ensure it’s within Queensland.

What support can I get?

Nominate a mentor (like a teacher or community leader) and access the support materials we’ll provide along the way.
