7th International River Symposium
The 2004 International River Symposium, held in Brisbane, focused on “Threats to Sustainable River Systems – Beating the Odds,” examining the numerous challenges facing rivers worldwide. The symposium discussed the impacts of climate change, over-extraction, pollution, and habitat destruction on river systems and explored innovative solutions to overcome these threats. It aimed to identify strategies that could help restore and protect rivers in the face of growing pressures.
The event brought together a wide range of experts to explore the complexities of river management and the need for urgent action. Discussions centred around the importance of ecosystem-based management approaches and the role of policy and regulation in mitigating the threats to rivers. The symposium underscored the need for resilience in river systems, ensuring that they can continue to support biodiversity, human communities, and economies.
