6th International River Symposium
The 2003 International River Symposium, held in Brisbane, explored the theme “Urban Rivers – Balancing Expectations,” focusing on the challenges of managing rivers in urban environments. As cities expanded, rivers became increasingly influenced by urbanisation, leading to issues such as pollution, habitat loss, and water management challenges. The symposium addressed the need to find a balance between the development of urban spaces and the preservation of river ecosystems.
Experts from around the world shared their experiences in managing urban rivers, highlighting innovative solutions to mitigate the impacts of urbanisation. The symposium stressed the importance of sustainable urban planning that takes into account the ecological health of rivers and the needs of local communities. It also called for greater community engagement in the management of urban rivers to ensure that they remain vibrant, functional, and resilient.
