3rd International River Symposium

The 2000 IRS, held in Brisbane, addressed "Sustaining Rivers - Defining the New International Agenda," discussing global river management and defining a unified international agenda for river sustainability.

Event Date

4th - 7th September 2000

With growing concerns about river degradation and water scarcity, the 2000 International River Symposium focused on defining an international approach to preserve and protect river systems. Exploring the theme, “The Scarcity of Water – The Future of Rivers, The Future of Water”, the event attracted experts from around the world to discuss the development of policies that would shape the future of river conservation on a global scale.

The symposium highlighted the need for a unified agenda that recognised the complexity of river systems and the interconnectedness of human activities and ecosystems. It encouraged a shift towards more sustainable water use and management practices, with a strong emphasis on environmental flows, ecosystem services, and collaborative governance.
