The IRS 2021 theme "Recovery to Resilience: Leveraging Partnerships," explored how collaborative efforts can drive the recovery and long-term resilience of river systems post-crisis.

The 2021 International River Symposium marked the first-ever hybrid symposium, combining in-person sessions in Brisbane with virtual participation worldwide. It addressed the theme “Recovery to Resilience – Leveraging Partnerships,” focusing on how collaboration can drive the recovery of river systems following crises such as natural disasters, pollution events, or overuse. The symposium highlighted the critical role of partnerships in building resilient river ecosystems that can adapt to future challenges.

Participants shared case studies of successful recovery efforts, emphasising the importance of combining local knowledge with scientific expertise. The event reinforced the value of partnerships between governments, communities, and private sectors in achieving sustainable outcomes for river systems worldwide.
