15th International River Symposium

Taking place in Melbourne, the 2012 International River Symposium addressed the challenges of “Rivers in a Rapidly Urbanising World,” recognising the impact of urbanisation on river systems. With more people living in cities than ever before, the symposium explored how urban growth affects river health, water quality, and ecosystem services.
Participants discussed the need for innovative solutions to manage rivers in urban environments, including green infrastructure, stormwater management, and community engagement. The symposium also highlighted the importance of integrating urban planning with river management to ensure that rivers remain viable and resilient amidst rapid urban expansion.
