14th International River Symposium
Returning the Brisbane, the 2011 International River Symposium explored the theme “The Value of Rivers,” emphasising the cultural, economic, and ecological importance of healthy river systems. The symposium encouraged participants to reflect on the many services rivers provide, from sustaining biodiversity and ecosystems to supporting communities, agriculture, and industries.
A key focus was on developing tools and frameworks for assessing the value of rivers and incorporating these valuations into decision-making. Case studies from around the world illustrated successful examples of balancing environmental, economic, and social needs. The discussions reinforced the idea that understanding and recognising the full value of rivers is essential for effective river management.
