12th International River Symposium
The 2009 International River Symposium, held in Brisbane, explored the theme “Rivers from Source to Sea,” highlighting the interconnectedness of river systems from their headwaters to their mouth. The symposium examined the importance of managing rivers as whole systems, recognising the impacts of upstream activities on downstream water quality, ecosystems, and communities.
Participants discussed the need for integrated river basin management that takes into account the entire river continuum. The symposium featured discussions on how to address the cumulative impacts of land use, water extraction, and pollution along the river’s journey from source to sea. It also underscored the importance of protecting freshwater and marine ecosystems through coordinated management efforts across river basins and coastal zones.
