11th International River Symposium

The 2008 International River Symposium, held in Brisbane, focused on the theme “A Future of Extremes,” acknowledging the growing challenges posed by climate change, including more frequent and severe droughts, floods, and storms. The symposium explored how these extreme weather events are impacting river systems and the need for adaptive management strategies to cope with the unpredictability of future climate scenarios.
Experts gathered to discuss the science of climate change and its effects on hydrology, water resources, and river ecosystems. The symposium called for a greater focus on building resilient river systems capable of withstanding these extremes. It emphasised the need for integrated approaches to managing rivers in a rapidly changing climate, with a focus on sustainability, community engagement, and policy development.
