Our Programs - River Recovery

Blue Line

As a 'voice for rivers', the IRF has developed the River Recovery program for river restoration works around the world, coordinated in partnership with local communities, governments and businesses. River recovery has real world outcomes driven by local and international coorperation, striving towards saving the world's rivers.

The IRF assists communities to better manage and prepare for flood and drought events and to build resilience into planning, on-ground works and education.

River recovery projects are essentially implementing on ground solutions, providing a vehicle for those passionate about river restoration to make a difference and raising awareness for those groups who are already working tirelessly in their pursuit of healthy rivers and communities. This dual focus of not just rivers, but also community, is essential in realising meaningful, long-term results that change lives and improve rivers.

The focus of our River Recovery programs can range from

  • Litter reduction and clean up
  • Species protection
  • Mining and rivers
  • Community health and clean water
  • Education and understanding the importance of rivers
  • Basin scale planning and management

Each river is unique and therefore recovers a unique solution towards recovery or protection. IRF River Recovery programs support global progress towards meeting the Millennium Development Goals.

The IRF has several river recovery activities already underway around the world. Furthermore, we have partners and communities around the world who would welcome further collaboration, support and resources to help realise their river vision and progress activities and achieve sustainability of outcomes.

Becoming involved is simple and there are a range of ways to contribute. These can include:

  • Providing funding support to assist specific on ground river recovery activities
  • Provision of simple materials such as saplings, shovels, rubbish removal to local groups
  • Contributing to consltation and raising awareness of the issues in your local area and promoting work already being done
  • Hosting a work-place river recovery day in conjunction with our partners
  • Sharing tools and knowledge from within your organisation that others may be lacking
  • Host a meeting or workshop to bring together leaders and passionate stakeholders committed to finding solutions to problems
  • Become a member of the IRF global community and implement a special River Recovery project you feel passionate about in your area of interest.
  • Sponsor a delegate from a river organisation to attend an international conference to share their views with the world.

There is no contribution to small to assist in our river recovery efforts. Being a 'voice for rivers' is the simplest thing you can do. Simply assist but promoting local efforts through your organisation, website or social media and shine a light on the good work already being done.

If you are interested in contributing to ongoing IRF River Recovery projects you can find our more on our case studies page.

Presently, the IRF has river recovery initiatives in Australia, Indonesia, the Philippines and Mongolia.
