International RiverFoundation in partnership with Ipswich City Council, launched the Bremer River Fund Committee during an early evening barbeque at Queens Park Environmental Education Centre, Ipswich.
“The launch was an exciting opportunity to celebrate the outcomes of our Bremer River Forum in April that showed the passion and commitment of some 200 delegates to working towards a brighter future for the Bremer River and its catchment,” said Peter Krause, CEO of International RiverFoundation.
“These delegates represented natural resource practitioners and researchers, government, community and industry – a great show of support for Ipswich’s most precious natural resource.”
The launch of the Bremer River Fund Committee signifies the next stage in the restoration of the Bremer River. Ipswich City Council had recently invested $5.4 million in the rejuvenation of River Heart Parklands, helping to “re-focus the city towards its historic riverfront”.
“Let’s continue to turn the tide on the Bremer River as a legacy for our City, our children, local industry and Moreton Bay,” Mayor Paul Pisasale said.
“Together, it is up to all of us – community groups and local businesses together with Council – to work to restore the river that is the lifeblood of our native fauna and flora, and a vibrant feature of our cityscape.”
The Bremer River Fund Committee will oversee the Bremer River Fund that will support the collaborative implementation of practical solutions to ensure the river’s future health and vitality.
This would include identifying hot spots for investment and action, improving riparian vegetation, reducing nutrient loads and increasing dissolved oxygen levels.
The Bremer River Fund Committee consists of representatives from Ipswich City Council, Swift Australia, New Hope Coal, Energex, Thiess, Natural Resources, CS Energy, Queensland Urban Utilities, International RiverFoundation and International WaterCentre.
Contributions to the Bremer River Fund will be managed by the committee, and donations can be made through International RiverFoundation.

The Brisbane River was a hive of activity from Tennyson to St. Lucia on Saturday 17 July as locals cheered along some of the finest rowing teams doing battle as part of the annual Head of the Brisbane Regatta.
The race kicked-off upstream at the Brisbane International Tennis Centre and followed 7 kilometres of the tree-lined Brisbane River, culminating at the Toowong Rowing Club where there was also LIVE entertainment, food and a kids area.
The event was hosted by Toowong Rowing Club in partnership with International RiverFoundation (IRF), to help generate greater awareness and much needed funds to support efforts to protect, restore and sustainably manage rivers around the world that are under threat.
Local musician and singer/songwriter Georgia Potter, most known for her unique blend of folk, philosophy and soul, agreed to be part of the event to get behind IRF’s efforts at a local level.
“Currently there is incredible focus on environmental issues from a global perspective and while that is a crucial way to think we must also remember that it is local action that will set the wheels turning,” Ms Potter said.

Environmentalists have been trying to restore the river and are opposing construction of dams on the river or its tributaries in the Himalayan region.
Their efforts got a boost when on August 24, 2010, Government of India decided to scrap the Loharinag-Pala, Pala-Maneri and Bhaironghati Hydroelectric projects on the Bhagirathi river (a tributaryof Ganga) and has also declared approximately 135 km section from Gaumukh (Headwaters of the Ganga) to Uttarkashi as an eco-sensitive zone under the Environment Protection Act (1986).
Above initiatives by Government of India have given hope to millions of devotees working for conservation and restoration of Ganga. Now it is the turn of the civil society to make Ganga a ‘’ nirmal evam avirat’’ (clean and free- flowing) river.
On August 28, 2010, Mr Jai Ram Ramesh (Hon’ble Minsiter of Environment and Forests, Government of India), while addressing a workshop at Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, has announced the formation of GANGA Panchayat. (Panchyat usually means a group of five wise persons elected as Trustees or Caretakers. But this number could be more depending upon the task.).
This formation process of GANGA Panchayat will be lead by Mr. Rajendra Singh, the Charman of Tarun Bharat Sangh, an NGO from Rajasthan state, which has successfylly carried out watershed development projects in semi-arid areas.
The process will start from 1st October 2010 for about 2 months. In this process Mr. Rajendra Singh will travel all along the course of Ganga river and find dedicated people who could devote their time and energy for improving Ganga .
Any interested volunteers, students, politicians, bureaucrats, technocrats, academicians, journalists, institutes, organizations and people from various walks of life, would be invited by the Panchatyat to join this arduous task.
