Grand River (Canada) – San Roque (Argentina)
The Grand River Conservation Authority (GRCA) from Canada, winner of the 2000 International Thiess Riverprize, has developed a mentor-based twinning project with the San Roque Lake Watershed in the Province of Cordoba, Argentina.
The project focuses on improving watershed management and conditions in support of economic and environmental sustainability. The partners have finalised:
- a watershed plan, and a watershed restoration program
- an environmental education program to reach students and their parents
- a sustainable tourism program

Achievements
This year the twinning partners secured AU $50,000 funds from the UN, the World Bank and other sources to match seed funding provided by IRF for the project. GRCA has hosted visits from San Roque Lake Watershed representatives to learn more about wetlands, sustainable farming, and waste water treatment facilities. Consultation by GRCA managers has already resulted in operational improvements related to water quality and dam operation in a recreation area in La Falda.
