Drôme River (France) – Tjangol Mangol (Senegal)
The Communauté de Communes du Val de Drôme (CCVD) from France, winner of the International Thiess Riverprize 2005, is twinning with the Tjangol Mangol Basin in Senegal.
This twinning project has been established for a number of years, and winning the prize provided the Drôme group with an opportunity to further their twinning efforts. The project aims to improve a river system on which around 35,000 people in the rural community of Sinthiou Bamanbé depend.
Achievements
Restoration efforts through twinning have been underway for more than seven years and include land rehabilitation, building of protective embankments, planting of trees and providing technical assistance and training. As a result, fish vhave begun to recolonise the Tjangol Mangol and its upstream reservoirs for the first time in more than 20 years.
