2013 - UN Year of Water Cooperation

Blue Line

In December 2010, the United Nations General Assembly declared 2013 as the United Nations International Year of Water Cooperation.

Water, a vital resource unlike any other, knows no borders. For instance, 148 countries share at least one transboundary river basin. As rapid urbanisation, climate change and growing food needs put ever-increasing pressure on freshwater resources, the objective of the year is to raise awareness of the potential for, and value of increased cooperation in relation to water.

World Rivers Day is a waterways celebration held annually on the last Sunday in September. In 2013, World Rivers Day falls on September 29. It is widely promoted in the northern hemisphere, notably in Canada where the concept was developed by renowned river conservationist Mark Angelo.

Today, millions of people participate in over thirty countries, with events held in Poland, England, USA, Spain, Japan and Russia as well as Australia.

In keeping with the original concept, the IRF is promoting World Rivers Day throught its global network, and for the second year in a row, is developing an Australian focused campaign.

Rivers and the waters they contain are the life blood of the European landscape but they need protection and restoration. This event provides an opportunity to share and learn about the successes and challenges of river restoration and be a part of the revival of rivers in Europe.

The Conference will provide:

  • Exciting examples of practical efforts to restore the natural state and functioning of rivers and how this has improved flood risk management, river ecology, and supported green infrastructure and community development. Several sites along the Danube will be visited on inspiring field trip excursions.
  • Exchange of expertise – about River Restoration from expert presentations, field trips to restoration sites, and workshop sessions
  • Valuable networking opportunities – the ideal platform to meet and share ideas with like minded professionals and practitioners involved in protection and restoration of Europe’s rivers.

The 5th River Restoration Conference will highlight what leading river restoration thinkers and practitioners have to offer in helping to bring new thinking into achieving goals of restoring and managing Europe’s Rivers.

It will support river managers, those tasked with implementing policy, and those undertaking river restoration on the ground to access current state of the art thinking and approaches.

The inaugral IRF European Riverprize will also be awarded at the Gala Dinner as part of this event.

World Water Week 2013 STOCKHOLM, SWEDEN

Blue Line

World Water Week is hosted and organised by the Stockholm International Water Institute (SIWI) and takes place each year in Stockholm. The World Water Week has been the annual focal point for the globe’s water issues since 1991.

Each year the World Water Week addresses a particular theme to enable a deeper examination of a specific water-related topic. While not all events during the week relate to the overall theme, the workshops driven by the Scientific Programme Committee and many seminars and side events do focus on various aspects of the theme.

The themes change each year, but each fits within a broader "niche" that covers several years. The current niche for 2009-2012 is "Responding to Global Changes", which looks at the potential and necessary responses in water policy, management and development to address pervasive and increasingly impacting global changes.

The themes within the current niche are:

2009: Accessing Water for the Common Good

2010: The Water Quality Challenge

2011: Water in an Urbanising World

2012: Water and Global Food Security

2013: Water Cooperation: Building Partnerships

On the 30th June 2013 the Red Deer River in Alberta, Canada will become the stage for a spectacular light installation that will transform the cities waterway into a River of Light.

Commissioned by the Central Alberta Historical Society for the Red Deer City Centennial, the River of Light will be the 3rd in a series of growing evolving installations created by UK based artistic studio, Creatmosphere that not only celebrate the importance of the river to the Red Deer community but also celebrate the rivers of the world through public art

Having taken place originally on the River Thames in London, UK in 2008, the River of Light has gained local and international recognition through it’s ability to not only engage communities to participate in the work but also to highlight the importance of river preservation and water conversation on a global scale.

Set to be bigger and more far-reaching than ever, Creatmosphere will be launching a crowdfunding campaign on the 4th March 2013 that aims to raise money for the River of Light and also illuminate issues surrounding river preservation and water conversation globally.
